Originally built on private land, the nation's largest sundial is in Carefree, Arizona. It was constructed in 1959 and is now located adjacent to the Desert Garden in the center of Carefree. In 1976 the Carefree Kiwanis Club purchased the land and donated it to the Town of Carefree in 1988. The donation was in memory of Kenon Turner Palmer, a founder of the town and member of the Kiwanis Club. The plaque is attached to a boulder and describes the purchase and recognizes the efforts of Palmer. Atop the boulder is another sundial. It includes a guide to translating the actual time.
