[en] On September 4, 1999, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, after three-year rehabilitation work south of Saldus (ger: Frauenburg), organized the largest German war grave in the Baltic States in Latvia. It is surmounted by a 7.5 meter high Christian metal cross. Based on the burial of 30,000 deaths, more than 22,000 prisoners were buried here until 2009. The bones of 2,000 dead came from a partially destroyed cemetery in Frauenburg itself. Saldus is the "central gathering-yard for the German soldiers and soldiers of other countries who fought in the western parts of Latvia or who were killed in war prisoners and who fought on the German side."

According to the explanatory panels in the cemetery, the losses of Germans and Latvians amounted to 50,000 men, the Red Army 400,000 men. At the time of the Soviets, many soldiers were also destroyed or made unrecognizable in Latvia.




[de] Am 4. September 1999 weihte der Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge nach dreijährigen Umbettungsarbeiten südlich von Saldus (dt. Frauenburg) in Lettland die größte deutsche Kriegsgräberstätte in den baltischen Staaten ein. Sie wird überragt von einem 7,5 Meter hohen christlichen Metallkreuz. Ausgelegt auf die Bestattung von 30.000 Toten, wurden hier bis 2009 mehr als 22.000 Gefallene beigesetzt. Die Gebeine von 2.000 Toten kamen von einem im Ort Frauenburg selbst gelegenen, teilzerstörtem Friedhof. Es handelt sich bei Saldus um den „zentralen Sammelfriedhof für die in den westlichen Landesteilen Lettlands gefallenen oder in Kriegsgefangenschaft ums Leben gekommenen deutschen Soldaten und Soldaten anderer Länder, die auf deutscher Seite kämpften“.

Laut Erklärungstafeln auf dem Friedhof betrugen in den Kurlandschlachten die Verluste von Deutschen und Letten 50.000 Mann, die der Roten Armee 400.000 Mann. Zur Sowjetzeit waren viele Soldatengräber auch in Lettland zerstört oder unkenntlich gemacht worden
