This pillar can be found 544 metres above sea level in the eastern Grampian Mountains of Scotland, high above the east side of Glen Esk in deer and grouse country.
It is situated only yards inside Aberdeenshire from the border with Angus on top of Sturdy Hill, a heathery top only slightly higher than surrounding similar rolling hills.
The pillar is still in good condition and on a clear day commands views south over the lowlands and north to the higher mountains.
STEEPNESS: A 400 metre climb from Glen Esk to the south-west. Various stalkers tracks find the easiest gradient which eases towards the top.
TERRAIN: Tracks from Glen Esk make easy going. Only the last couple of hundred yards cross undulating grass and heather.
ACCESSIBILITY: Reachable from the Glen Esk road via a couple of bulldozed stalkers tracks which climb the hillside to the top in around two miles. It is best avoided during the stalking and grouse shooting season.
NAVIGATION: The tracks help in mist but navigation becomes difficult near the top when off track as the terrain is featureless and the pillar is difficult to locate. The track coming up from the south-west is easier as it comes close to the top next to a deer fence where a hole in the fence is only yards from the pillar.
DANGER: None except for the hole in the fence which is not very large and can't be avoided if visiting the pillar.
