Hannah Packer was born in 1841 and married a Quaker bank clerk, Richard Packer. After 12 years of marriage she was left a widow. She turned to nursing and started nursing at the Quaker Hospital in York. A move to the Royal Southern in Liverpool eventually saw Hannah become Matron within four years of arrival. In 1882 she went to Uruguay to join her future husband Dr Francis Davison, medical officer to a British mining company in Minas de Corrales.
Dr Davison and his wife engaged in relief work for the poor in the town when the price of gold slumped in 1890 and the mine closed. Political unrest and violence erupted, during which Dr Davison treated 250 wounded people on the battlefield whilst Hannah organised an emergency hospital. Her actions received praise from the International Red Cross. She also received a letter from Queen Victoria in thanks for her charitable work in sending clothing to the poor of London.
The plaque was unveiled by the Honorary Curator of Thirsk Museum, Mr Cooper Harding, who researched the life of Hannah Packer.
