From the time the Transcontinental Railroad was finished here in 1867, the Old Donner Pass Road crossed the railroad at a grade crossing. In 1913 the Old Donner Pass Road was included as part of the Lincoln Highway. In 1914, the grade crossing was replaced with this underpass structure. The road remained a part of the Lincoln Highway until 1926, when it replaced by the current Donner Pass Road and Summit Bridge in 1926, in 1928 that new road was named Highway 40.
In addition to the underpass much of the Old Donner Pass Road (Lincoln Highway) remain in place and is used as a trail.
