Forfar's Free Library was first established in the Meffan Institute, built in 1898 in the town's West High Street. This housed a Reading Room, Library and Reference room, Museum Room and a Hall. The library was extended in 1967-68 but was removed in 1988 and re-established a hundred yards up the street in a larger site that had housed a supermarket.
