The family name, "Heir", is on the reverse, on the plinth, while Mr. Heir's inscription is where one would expect it to be:

Zach Heir

Born
June 25, 1869,
Died
June 24, 1907.

On the plinth is an epitaph, referencing John Greenleaf Whittier: "Gone before, our brother, To the spirit land. Vainly look we for another in Thy place to stand." The first Mrs. Heir is also listed on the plinth:

Ada, Wife of Zach Heir
Born Aug. 27, 1875,
Died Jan. 25, 1906.

Note "Bois D'Arc Camp No. 1326" on the handles of the mallet and axe.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
