John Bartlett was born Plymouth, MA on June 14, 1820. At age 16 he worked at the Harvard University bookstore where he became an such an expert on book knowledge that the advice “Ask John Bartlett” became a common phrase at Harvard. In 1855 he published the first edition of his now famous book Familiar Quotations, which was based on the notebook he kept. The book Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, published in 2012, is currently in its eighteenth edition. He also is famous for compiling , editing and publishing quotations from Shakespeare and he Bible.
