EN: This monument is located in Seltisberg on the road to Lupsingen.

It reminds us of Dr. Ernst Madörin-Born. Unfortunately, I could not find much more about him than what is on the sign. He lived from 1916-1965 and was probably a citizen of Seltisberg. In 1959, he published a book that had the subtitle "An attempt at a Christian work ethic". The text on the sign is probably a summary of these theses.

The translated text: "1. Work is a divine commandment and as such unchangeable. It is the presupposition of human existence (acquisition of daily bread in the widest sense) and culture. Only the effort now connected with the work is a consequence of the sin case, not the work itself.

2. In the divine election, the meaning and dignity of human labor is founded. The Christian doctrine demands that the dignity of the work be preserved without exception. However, the dignity of the work is no longer safeguarded where the worker can not freely choose his work and his place of work, where he is treated, in a contract of employment, not as an coworker but only as a bearer of the product manpower, where he lives in economic deprivation, fear and insecurity, and where he does not receive the share of the goods of this earth which is due to him, or where this share of fellow human beings is diminished in the abuse of economic power.

3. The purpose of human fellowship is not self-seeking, but culture, created by social work-sharing performance. The dignity of labor is not respected even where the laborer, separated from the means of production, land and capital, is compelled to do work for its own sake, or to make senseless or absurd work, indeed, where senseless or absurd work is done at all.

4. Work has no primary importance in the life of mankind. Its purpose is to make man free to participate in the service of the cause of God. God not only demands work from man, but also peace. Only in Christian faith and obedience he will be able to recognize the meaning and necessity of his work.

5. Anyone who is able to work is obliged to work, even if he does not need the work to gain his livelihood. On the other hand, anyone who is able to work is entitled to work.

6. Property obliges to work and work establishes property. The property is inextricably linked to the work in the sense that the work must correspond to the property belonging to it. Unrestrained property, which serves to unfold and abuse economic power by appropriating the fruits of other men's labor, rejects Christian work ethics."

Es erinnert an Dr. Ernst Madörin-Born. Leider konnte ich nicht viel mehr herausfinden als auf der Tafel steht. Er lebte von 1916-1965 und war vermutlich Bürger von Seltisberg. Er veröffentlichte 1959 ein Buch das den Untertitel "Versuch einer christlichen Arbeitsethik" hatte. Der Text auf der Tafel ist wahrscheinlich eine Zusammenfassung dieser Thesen.

Der Text: "1. Arbeit ist göttliches Gebot und als solches unwandelbar. Sie ist Voraussetzung menschlicher Existenz (Erwerb des täglichen Brotes im weitesten Sinne) und Kultur. Lediglich die jetzt mit der Arbeit verbundene Mühe ist eine Folge des Sündenfalles, nicht die Arbeit selbst.

2. In der göttlichen Erwählung liegt der Sinn und die Würde der menschlichen Arbeit begründet. Die christliche Lehre verlangt gebieterisch, dass die Würde der Arbeit ausnahmslos gewahrt werde. Die Würde der Arbeit ist aber dort nicht mehr gewahrt, wo der Arbeitende seine Arbeit und seinen Arbeitsplatz nicht frei wählen kann, wo er - in einem Arbeitsvertragsverhältnis stehend - nicht als Mitarbeiter, sondern nur als Träger der Ware Arbeitskraft behandelt wird, in wirtschaftlicher Not, Furcht und Unsicherheit leben muss und wo er nicht den ihm gebührenden Anteil an den Gütern dieser Erde erhält bzw. wo ihm dieser Anteil von Mitmenschen in Missbrauch wirtschaftlicher Macht geschmälert wird.

3. Zweck der menschlichen Gemeinschaft ist nicht die Selbstsucht, sondern Kultur, geschaffen durch gesellschaftliche - eben soziale - arbeitsteilige Leistung. Die Würde der Arbeit ist auch dort nicht gewahrt, wo der Arbeitende, getrennt von den Produktionsmitteln Boden und Kapital, gezwungen ist, Arbeit um ihrer selbst willen, sinnlose oder sinnwidrige Arbeit zu leisten, ja wo überhaupt sinnlose oder sinnwidrige Arbeit geleistet wird.

4. Die Arbeit hat im Leben des Menschen nicht primäre Bedeutung. Ihr Sinn besteht darin, den Menschen für die Beteiligung am Dienst an der Sache Gottes frei zu machen. Gott fordert nicht nur Arbeit vom Menschen, sondern auch Ruhe. Nur in christlichem Glauben und Gehorsam wird der den Sinn und die Notwendigkeit seiner Arbeit erkennen können.

5. Jedermann, der arbeitsfähig ist, ist zur Arbeit verpflichtet, selbst dann, wenn er der Arbeit nicht bedürfte, um seinen Lebensunterhalt zu gewinnen. Andererseits, jedermann der arbeitsfähig ist, hat ein Anrecht auf Arbeit.

6. Eigentum verpflichtet zur Arbeit und Arbeit begründet Eigentum. Mit der Arbeit untrennbar verbunden ist auch das Eigentum in dem Sinne, dass der Arbeit das ihr gehörende Eigentum zukommen muss. Schrankenloses Eigentum, das dazu dient, wirtschaftliche Macht zu entfalten und zu missbrauchen durch Aneignung der Früchte fremder Arbeit, widerspricht christlicher Arbeitsethik."
