Elevation sign (7135 feet) at Historic Donner Summit on Donner Pass Road (old U.S. Hwy. 40). The pass is at the summit of the Sierra Nevada.
The original Donner Pass used by emigrants and travelers until the mid 1920’s is a tenth of a mile to the south at an elevation of approximately 7060 feet. In the mid 1920’s U.S. Hwy. 40 was built to replace the old emigrant route and crossed the summit here. In the early 1960’s Interstate 80 was constructed about 2 miles to the north through Euer Saddle at an elevation of 7240 feet (now known as Donner Summit). Hence the name Historic Donner Summit for this location.
The U.S.G.S. topographic quad Norden shows an elevation of 7088 feet for this location instead of the 7135 feet on the summit sign.
