Inscription: (On front of shaft:) LEST WE FORGET/IN MEMORY/OF THE/HEROIC ACHIEVEMENTS/OF/CLAY COUNTY MEN/IN THE/WORLD WAR/1917-1918 unsigned

Description: Full-length figure of a World War I doughboy standing at attention on top of a shaft. Soldier wears uniform of a tunic, helmet, ammunition belt, and leggings. He stands with arms at sides and proper right hand holding a rifle with its stock on the ground next to proper right foot. There is an inscription below soldier. The shaft sits on a square rusticated stone base.

Remarks: IAS files contain excerpt from Clay County Missouri Souvenir (pg. 147-148) which discusses dedication of the statue; and Liberty Tribune-News (May 1921). The cost of the monument was $3,000; with contributions from the State ($1,000), Clay County Court ($1,000), City of Liberty ($1,000) and Liberty Commercial Club ($500). The memorial was unveiled May 30, 1921 on the grounds of the Old Courthouse. It was moved in 1934, when the courthouse was razed, as part of a Works Progress Administration project.
