The construction for the roundhouse started in December 1913, and it was finished in November of next year. It is made of steel-reinforced concrete, one of the oldest such building in Japan, and has remained relatively unchanged since. After many of the steam locomotives were retired from service, this was converted into a museum in 1972 to coincide with Japan's 100th year of railroad operation.
It is still a fully active roundhouse, as excursion steam locomotives are VERY popular in Japan and they need to be serviced here.
There is a LOGGING REQUIREMENT: You need a photo of the roundhouse and a steam locomotive together, good enough to be identifiable. There's no need to go inside the museum to do this if you consider yourself a *REAL* railfan and Waymarker.
