The MV Conestoga was built in 1878. It plied the St Lawrence for 44 years. on the night of 21 May, 1922, it caught fire while in the Galop Canal. The Lockmaster, fearing it would scuttle in the Lock, instead sit it free to drift. It ran aground and burned to the waterline. The cargo of wheat, however, was saved.
The wreck is a very popular dive site.
