'Reaching Up' Shows a life-size painting of a small boy reaching for a hole in the wall. The content in the hole changes as various tourist have different ideas, my gallery photos show a plastic cup in the hole. He appears to be standing on a now worn out, & refurbished real chair & inching himself as high as he could reach. The boy on a chair is painted at the entrance steps to a Chinese Shop-house. The painting was created by Ernest Zacharevic in conjunction with the 2012 George Town Festival.
Street Art:
"It is located in various spots. So you have to walk around to find them. The paintings were commissioned in 2012. Penang’s municipal council hired London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic and charged him with breathing new life into some of the atmospheric Chinese shop-houses around the inner city. The result is an eclectic mix of media. His paintings are witty, and fascinating with murals as well as utilising real objects. So some of the images are 2D combined with 3D (actual objects). The murals depict the lives in this area from the past. How you view his work is up to your interpretation and it is a refreshing approach. The street art has transformed the old part of George Town into a busy area full of tourists all year round. Narrow streets and alley ways are now bustling with tourists." Text Source: (
