An inscription on the obelisk tells us that on March 8th 1899 the park and pleasure ground was handed over by Coalville Athletic Club to the Urban District Council to hold in trust for use of residents for free and forever. The obelisk was erected in October 1912. Two other inscribed panels list name of dignitaries and officials of that time.
The obelisk appears to be made fromn a dark marble on a stepped stone plinth.
