DE: Am Herchenberg, einem erloschenen Tuff- und Schlackenvulkan nordwestlich von Burgbrohl, wird dunkelrote Schaumlava abgebaut, die vor allem im Straßenbau verwendet wird. Es gibt einen Infopunkt, von dem aus man die Abbaugrube gut einsehen kann. Vor etwa 500.000 Jahren spuckte die Erde dort, wo später der Herchenberg entstand, Feuer und glühende Lava. Nach einer Ruhephase brach der Vulkan vor etwa 210.000 Jahren erneut aus. Die erdgeschichtliche Entwicklungen lässt sich in den Schichten des Berges, der durch den Lavaabbau aufgeschlossen wurde, gut ablesen. Zwischen den rötlich-braunen Schichten des unteren Bereichs und den schwärzlich-braunen Schlacken darüber befindet sich eine hellere Schicht, die aus nichtvulkanischem Bodenmaterial besteht. In der Abbauwand am Südwesthang befinden sich steil stehende Gänge, bei denen es sich um Schlote mit erstarrter Magma handelt, die beim Abbau freigelegt wurden. Eine Vielzahl von Dokumenten belegt die Mühlsteingewinnung am Herchenberg. Vermutlich wurden dort bereits im Mittelalter hier Mühlsteine gebrochen.

There is an infopoint from which the Abbaugrube can be seen. About 500,000 years ago the earth spat fire and glowing lava where the Herchenberg was later. A large number of documents document the Mill Mill at Herchenberg. Probably there were already millstones broken here in the Middle Ages.
