L'abbaye de Montierneuf, comme tant d'autres en Saintonge tient sa dénomination du terme saintongeais abbaye (prononcer abeille) désignant tout monastère.
Le pigeonnier est classé au titre des monuments historiques en 1951, la porte est inscrite en 1941, le Logis et les vestiges de la priorale sont inscrits en 1989.
Il s'agit en fait d'un prieuré (puis prieuré-seigneurie) fondé vers 1072 par l'abbaye de Vendôme qui ne pouvait alors faire respecter ses droits dans une Saintonge maritime qui s'étendait du monastère Saint-Georges (pointe nord-ouest de l'île d'Oleron) à Sainte-Marie (actuel Sables d'Olonne).
Malheureusement, cette prospérité fut stoppée par les guerres de religions, puis la grande peste de 1346.
C’est au 16ème siècle que le prieur décide de reconstruire le prieuré et d’édifier le pigeonnier.
Un tel monument aussi magnifiquement orné, servait à montrer aux seigneurs des alentours la prospérité du prieuré.
L’intérieur est composé de 2959 boulins (trous en pierre servant de niches aux pigeons) ce qui est beaucoup. En effet, le nombre de boulins devait être proportionnel au territoire cultivé dans l’exploitation. Or à Montierneuf, il était deux fois plus important ! Le pigeonnier fut donc remblayé sur sa partie basse, sur décision de la justice royale suite à des procès intentés par les seigneurs voisins.
La quasi-totalité des vestiges forme une propriété privée sise au 57 avenue de Montierneuf, 17620 Saint-Agnant. Après 20 ans de travaux de réhabilitation, une soi-disant emphytéose garantissant l'accès public s'est révélée néfaste (abandon d'entretien et des animations ; arrêt des chantiers internationaux) et impose une totale réorganisation juridique, en cours, pour restaurer un plein accès public toujours souhaité par les propriétaires.
Entre-temps, l'approche libre de la fuie 1re Renaissance reste tolérée en cette année de son 500e anniversaire. Les propriétaires expriment leurs regrets devant une telle situation et œuvrent pour une réouverture prochaine sous conditions sanitaires (et autres risques) réglementaires et sures

The abbey of Montierneuf, like so many others in Saintonge has its denomination of the term saintongeais abbey (to pronounce bee) designating all monastery.
The dovecote is classified as historic monuments in 1951, the door is inscribed in 1941, the Logis and the vestiges of the priority are inscribed in 1989.
It is in fact a priory (then a priory-seigniory) founded about 1072 by the Abbey of Vendome which could not then enforce its rights in a maritime Saintonge that stretched from the monastery of St. George (north- West of the island of Oleron) to Sainte-Marie (currently Sables d'Olonne).
Unfortunately, this prosperity was stopped by the wars of religions, then the great plague of 1346.
It was in the 16th century that the prior decided to rebuild the priory and build the pigeon house.
Such a magnificently ornamented monument served to show the lords of the neighborhood the prosperity of the priory.
The interior is composed of 2959 boulins (stone holes serving as niches to the pigeons) which is a lot. Indeed, the number of boulins had to be proportional to the territory cultivated on the farm. Now at Montierneuf, it was twice as important! The pigeon was therefore filled on its lower part, following a decision of the royal justice following lawsuits brought by the neighboring lords.
Almost all the remains form a private property located at 57 avenue de Montierneuf, 17620 Saint-Agnant. After 20 years of rehabilitation work, a so-called emphyteusis guaranteeing public access proved to be harmful (abandoning maintenance and animations, stopping international work sites) and imposing a total legal reorganization in progress to restore Full public access always desired by the owners.
Meanwhile, the free approach of the first Renaissance foul remains tolerated in this year of its 500th anniversary. The owners express their regret at this situation and are working towards an early reopening under sanitary conditions (and other risks) that are safe and sound.
