John Gilbert Baker was born on January 13 1834 to John and Mary (nee Gilbert) Baker, drapers of Thirsk. He was educated at Ackworth and Bootham Schools. In 1864 a fire destroyed the family home, and with it Baker’s books and botanical collection. The fire prompted Baker to work in the library and herbarium of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. This he did from 1866 to 1899, being the keeper of the herbarium from 1890 to 1899. He was the authors of several books and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1878. He was awarded the Veitch Memorial Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1907. He died in Kew in 1920.

The plaque was unveiled in 2005 by Professor Simon Owens, keeper of the herbarium at Kew. The plaque reads

“The house which stood on this site was occupied by James Gilbert Baker FRS FLS 1834-1920 a famous botanist, president of the Thirsk Natural History Society, author of Flora of North Yorkshire and other books, keeper of the herbarium The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew 1890-1899”
