James Alfred Wight was born in Sunderland on 3rd October 1916. The family lived in Glasgow where Alfred attended Hillhead High School. In 1939 he qualified as a veterinary surgeon at Glasgow Veterinary College. After a short time at a practice in Sunderland, Alf Wight came to work at the practice in Thirsk. He served in the RAF from 1942 to 1945.
He had always had an ambition to write and in 1969 he wrote If Only They Could Talk using the pen name James Herriot. Sales of the book, published by Michael Joseph ltd, were slow until it was read by Thomas McCormack of St Martin’s Press in New York. Rebranded as All Creatures Great & Small, the book and its sequels proved a hit, being transformed onto the TV screen and two films.
The plaque reads
“James Alfred Wight 1916-1995. Veterinary surgeon & author of the James Herriott books lived & worked here. His stories and characters were portrayed in film & television as All Creatures Great & Small.”
