"Dozens of people showed up at an Owego town board meeting to protest the wording on a new 9/11 Memorial.
Construction on the memorial at Hickories Park is nearing completion. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sunday on the fifteenth anniversary of the attacks that left about 3,000 people dead.A granite monument in the center of the memorial refers to “nineteen Islamic terrorists” who boarded four airliners on September 11, 2001.
Several people who spoke at Tuesday evening’s town board meeting criticized the phrase. Some suggested it would be more appropriate if the monument referred simply to “terrorists” or perhaps “Al Qaeda terrorists.”Town supervisor Donald Castellucci told WNBF News that he “understands” the complaints some people have registered about the wording. He said he and the project contractor collaborated on the monument’s message."

"September 11, 2001; one of the darkest days this country ever experienced.
Across the United States, and locally in the Southern Tier, people lost loved ones.
David Statkevicus, who grew up in Apalachin, died during the terrorist attacks...The town picked up the pieces the last day World Trade Center artifacts were given away. Some believe it was meant to be. "This is probably one of the most comprehensive memorials. You have the pentagon shaped chains around the mosaic, the pieces of the World Trade Center, the Pennsylvania state tree, the New York state tree and Virginia state tree out there," said Donald Castellucci Jr., town of Owego Supervisor.""

"The Town of Owego is raising money to build a memorial to the September 11th attacks in time for the 15th anniversary..."The way we have it set up with blue twin towers behind it. You see that in New York City and places like that but you don't see that in a lot of the other places that I've looked. I think when it's done, people will be very happy with this," he said."
