Inscription -

"IN LOVING GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF"/ (Names)/ "WHO TO THEIR/ (...) HONOUR/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ SINCE THE END OF WW2, 1945"

The monument was unveiled 22 June 2014.

"The Clock Tower, in Memorial Square, Coalville, bears the names of more than 500 servicemen from the area who fought and died in the two world wars.

They have now been joined by Reuben Nicholls, George Bott, Ronnie Bowman and Adam Morris, who were killed in conflicts since 1945.

A dedication ceremony brought together families, friends, veterans, armed forces representatives and civic dignitaries on Sunday to honour the men.

Reuben Nicholls, a Royal Marine commando from Hugglescote, died while a prisoner of war in Korea in 1951, at the hands of his Chinese captors.

His nephew, John Nicholls, 72, travelled from his home in Wokingham, Berkshire, to attend the service.

He said: "My uncle was just 25 when he died, after being captured by Chinese forces during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir the year before.

"We believe he was shot in retribution for an escape attempt.

"It wasn't until a few years ago when I was put in touch with an American soldier in Montana, who was a prisoner of war, that I learned of his fate.

"Reuben is commemorated at the United Nations cemetery in Busan, South Korea, the Royal Marine church in Brickleigh, Devon, and the National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire.

"But this is the first memorial bearing his name in his home town, or even Leicestershire.

"It means an awful lot to the family and we would like to thank everybody involved for helping to make it happen.

"I think it was a very emotional day for all the families. There were a few tears." "
