The graveyard was opened in 1719 with the first ones buried here were in 1725. This yard in on the National Register of Historic Places.

John James sold the plot of land making up the 1 acre parcel to the Town of Hartford in 1719. People who died before this would have been buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in the center of Hartford 5 miles away. Internments continued until 1868. There is a large memorial boulder in the front section of the graveyard, honoring the French soldiers who died in West Hartford during the American Revolution. It was placed here in 1823 by the Sarah Whitman Hooker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
