"The original town of Tekoa was a village in Judah, 12 miles south of Jerusalem. In Hebrew, "tekoa" means, "pitching of tents" Mrs. Mary Ann Truax was reminded of a Biblical tent village when she saw railroad workers' tents pitched along Hangman Creek, and suggested the name Tekoa for the new town, incorporated in 1890. Two railroad lines, the Union Pacific and the Milwaukee, turned the town into a prosperous shipping center that moved grain, apples, seed peas, sheep, and other goods from farm to market."
