Very striking Monument Against Poverty dedicated to the work of activist Dorothy O'Connell, who has been tireless in her efforts, along with the City of Ottawa, to champion the causes of those who must regularly choose between food or shelter due to poverty.
The piece, by renowned Ottawa artist C.J. Fleury, is constructed of red granite. It depicts a slice of bread, with a hole in it. The hole, in the shape of a house, stresses the choices that are faced by those in poverty.
The house, laying nearby, is used as a podium for activist rallies, such as Ottawa's anti-poverty walk.
On the interior of the opening are inscribed, in both English and French, the words "Poverty stops Equality. Equality stops Poverty.", a quote attributed to Dorothy O'Connell.
The piece is located on the south lawn of Ottawa City Hall, off Lisgar Street.
