"Nestled in a patchwork of rolling green hills and farmland in Washington’s Palouse region, the town of Farmington—aptly named for its thriving ag community which specializes in lentils, wheat and barley—is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the nation.
Not much has changed since the town’s establishment in 1871. Businesses still cater to the agricultural needs of its 150 inhabitants, including the $12 million Farmington State Bank, which has been operating in the same 25foot by 60 foot brick building since 1929.
“Farmington State Bank is a unique, independent little bank, I would guess probably one of the smallest, oldest established banks in the US,” said John Widman, president of Farmington State Bank. “Farmington State Bank and the Lamont Bank of St. John are the last two one-office independent banks in Whitman County.” (
