This pillar is situated on top of the Hill of Alyth on the northern edge of Strathmore in eastern Perthshire, Scotland.

The hill rises north of the small town that it is named after and is a popular walk. The Cateran Trail walking route passes by on both sides of the hill and the view from the top is extensive with the Grampian Mountains to the north and the Sidlaw Hills across Strathmore to the south. An orientation table used to lie nearby but the plate is missing from the top of the plinth.

STEEPNESS: A reasonable gradient of 200 metres in just over a mile.

TERRAIN: Utilises tracks which were once old drovers routes. Once off the tracks the top of the hill is of short grass and gorse with paths picking their way to the summit.

ACCESSIBILITY: Easily reached from the town. The waymarked Cateran Trail guides the walker up most of the way. The trail headed for Glenisla crosses the east side of the hill, the trail to Bridge of Cally crosses the west side. The pillar is equidistant from both tracks.

NAVIGATION: Well signposted, although in mist the summit area can be a confusing mass of small hillocks. Keep to the most well worn tracks to reach the pillar. The defunct orientation table is only a few yards to the north.

DANGER: None, there are no crags or steep slopes in the vicinity.
