In the 1920s, the railway line from the Ruhr area to Hamburg was to be expanded to a total of four tracks. The 765 m long tunnel below the Teutoburg Forest was replaced to today's tunnel, running parallel. The original tunnel was repaired and then used in the following years for the two additional planned tracks. The Second World War prevented the four-track expansion of the railway line, instead, an "U-Verlagerung" (an armament factory) under the code name "partridge" (project A1) was set up in the old tunnel.

In 1944, the so-called "Jägerstab", which was involved in arms issues, acquired the unused tunnel as "Project A1", as armament production was to be relocated underground to bomb-proof premises. The subterranean factory with the name "partridge" now served as a secret warehouse for war production and henceforth ensured the manufacture of profiles for fighter wings. Organizationally, the production facility was assigned to the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg. The old tunnel thus became a concentration camp Lengerich. A short time later, the tunnel served as a shelter for the Lengerich population, who sought protection here from bombs and artillery fire.

The tunnel tube of the (old) Lengericher tunnel still exists today, but the entrances are closed because of acute danger of collapse of the tunnel.
