A number of monks, fleeing from the tyranny of Duke Waifre of Aquitaine, retired to the valley where the present town is. Pepin the Short had them build a monastery which he endowed with land. The foundations of the abbey church were laid at that time. To the east were the cloisters which no longer exist. The bell tower is from the 10th century. It is square in its basement and rises in decreasing. Columns adorn the full-length windows. Their capitals are of Corinthian order. On the front of the main door, in the wall of the bell tower, are niches intended to receive statues. The door was rebuilt in the 17th century. The apse is more recent than the bell tower. Since the church of the convent had become too small for a cathedral church, another building was built from the 14th century, beginning with the apse. The nave was begun in the 15th century, and absorbed the cloisters. The new building was not completed until 1682.



Un certain nombre de religieux fuyant la tyrannie du duc Waïfre d'Aquitaine, s'est retiré dans la vallée où se trouve la ville actuelle. Pépin le Bref leur fit bâtir un monastère qu'il dota de terres. Les fondements de l'église abbatiale furent jetés à cette époque. A l'est se situaient les cloîtres qui n'existent plus. Le clocher est du 10e siècle. Il est carré dans son soubassement et s'élève en s'amoindrissant. Des colonnes ornent les fenêtres plein cintre. Leurs chapiteaux sont d'ordre corinthien. Sur le devant de la porte principale, pratiquées dans le mur du clocher, se trouvent des niches destinées à recevoir des statues. La porte a été reconstruite au 17e siècle. L'abside est plus récente que le clocher. L'église du couvent étant devenue trop petite pour une église cathédrale, un autre édifice fut bâti à partir du 14e siècle, en commençant par l'abside. La nef fut commencée au 15e siècle, et a absorbé les cloîtres. Le nouvel édifice ne fut achevé qu'en 1682.
