The original house was built in 1710, with updates to the structure in 1820 and then again in 1870. It was the home of Mercy Sands Raymond, who was associated with the pirate, Captain Kidd.

The main part of the house was Federal style structure, originally with a gable roof. In 1820 the roof was replaced with hipped roof. In 1870 the central chimney was removed and 2 smaller chimneys were installed in its place. Additions were added to the back of the home, including a kitchen.
