The peace loving and inoffensive Giant Anteater resides in tropical savannas and forests from Mexico to South America, where it consumes 30,000 ants and termites a day. A member of the Myrmecophagidae Family, the average anteater weighs 100 pounds, attains a length of seven feet from nose to tail, possesses a 24-inch tongue, and lives to be 25 years old. The anteater was elected mascot of the University of California, Irvine on November 25, 1965, two months after UCI opened its doors to students. Although some skeptics argues that the anteater lacked dignity, most students were taken by the gentle anti-hero nature of the mascot. In a spirited election, the anteater easily defeated its closest rival, "None of These." "ZOT!" - The sound made by the anteater when zapping an ant in the "B.C." cartoon - became the battle cry of UCI.
