This pub was formerly called the Harecastle Hotel with a sign depicting the nearby Harecastle Tunnel on the Trent and Mersey Canal, which runs behind the property.

The Railway Inn now shows a hanging pub sign that depicts a steam engine and is modern in design for this newly opened public house, probably as the railway runs directly behind it.

The growth of the railway network across the country spawned a large number of railway signs. Despite the axe of Dr Beeching in the 1960s, many such pub names survive.

About the Pub
Large pub on the main road through the top of Kidsgrove, re-open in the spring of 2016 after spending a couple of years as a tea room; these days, it opens as a cafe in the morning (9am - 2pm), then becomes a pub later on. Fresh baps are always available in the pub, even if the cafe is not open.
