The sides of the bridge on the towpath had a metal insert to protect the bridge from damage from the tow ropes used by the horses to tow boats on the canal. The protectors did their job and has deep grooves on them instead of the bridge itself.
Close to the bridge is a store of stop planks. These are used to block off the canal when it needs to be drained for maintenance. Bridges and locks are often the sites for such planks because the canal is at its narrowest at these points.
