There has been substantial 'refitting' recently, as there had been structural damage from a vehicle hitting the side, so it has been externally strengthened.
On the western side of the bridge there is a commemorative plaque, which reads:
"Clarence Town Bridge
(The "Brig" O'Johnston)
was officially named by
John Price, MP
Member for Maitland
on 21 July 2001
Commemorating a Bicentenary of River Navigation
The bridge was constructed by the Department of Public Works in 1880 and is the oldest timber truss bridge in NSW.
William "Brig" Johnston played a major role in the decision to build the bridge when he was the member for The Williams electorate.
