The Leeds Pals were a First World War battalion of troops
raised in Leeds. They were officially known as the 15th Battalion (1st
Leeds) of The Prince of Wales’s Own West Yorkshire Regiment.
Formed in September 1914 the battalion were transferred by rail to Masham Station, from where they walked the 6 miles to the
training camp at Colsterdale. In December 1915 they
were despatched to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal. By March 1916 they were
transferred to France and saw action at the Somme. They sustained substantial
casualties at the Somme.
