In the Hall Square there is a board giving a walk around the town along with historical notes. The tour takes in the following
1. Hall Square where a market was held from 1310. On the gateposts to the hall is a plaque denoting the birthplace of the eminent explorer Isobella Bird.
2. Fishergate bridge over the River Tutt built by the blind engineer “Blind Jack” Metcalfe.
3. Bridge over the River Ure where the Battle of Boroughbridge took place.
4. John Boddy Timber on Valuation Lane which produced the timbers for the restoration of Windsor Castle and York Minster.
5. Druids Meadow on Roecliffe Lane where there are 2000 year old standing stones known as the Devil’s Arrows.
6. Crown Hotel on Horsefair a coaching inn on what was once the Great North Road
7. St Helena’s Square and the Peggy Bridge which contains part of the fourth Devil’s Arrow.
