Mounted exact replica of Spitfire Mark IX ML135 located in the newly-named Spitfire Park in Essex.
The aircraft, built in 2014, is an exact fibreglass replica of the Spitfire flown during World War II by local RCAF pilot Jerry Billings. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX was built initially as a stop-gap measure to counter the German FW-190. However, it and its subsequent variants soon became the predominant Allied fighter, and would remain so until the end of the war. There were 5,665 built.
Billings was shot down three times during the war. After the war he continued his military career, ending up with over 53 years in the sky. After retirement he continued to fly from a grass strip near here. Billings passed away in 2015.
