The former Kendall County jail and sheriff’s office, a primitive limestone structure next to this city’s historic courthouse, would become a Texana museum under a proposal that has cleared its first hurdle.

County commissioners voted last week to form a panel to study the project’s feasibility after hearing a pitch by resident Dean Sprowl to convert the dormant hoosegow into an educational attraction showcasing artifacts of local history.
There’s long been talk locally about repurposing the iconic building. It was the county jail from 1884 to 1987, and as recently as four years ago, it housed workers not involved in law enforcement on its first floor. These days, it’s being used only to store records.
“We believe that a permanent site for preservation of county history and the opportunity to tell the story of the rich history in our area is a vital service to offer our citizens,” Sprowl told commissioners. “We want to make sure that those who came before us and made this (community) possible are left with the legacy they deserve.”
He and other museum proponents plan to form a nonprofit corporation to seek grants, a share of locally collected hotel/motel tax revenues and other funding.
