Along Oyama Road facing Wood Lake, the Oyama Community Hall and grounds are the focal point of community life in the village. The hall is one of the properties in the town overseen and operated by the Oyama Community Club, now over 100 years old.

The Community Hall is a large, two storey concrete block building, in the rear of which one will find the Oyama Legion. The front two thirds of the building consists of the hall, while upstairs in the rear of the building is a large community meeting room. The Lake Country Museum has created a series of large panels, each of which relates a particular aspect of the local history. To date a half dozen or more of these panels have been installed in the meeting room, with more to follow.

The grounds consist of a small park in the rear, a Rotary sponsored ball park, a camping area and a nice new community garden. The hall and grounds may be rented for a 48 hour weekend for the paltry sum of $850.00, the hall alone for $350.00 for one day.

When the Oyama Community Club applied for a grant to do some much needed repairs and renovations to the hall, the money available turned out not to meet their needs. As a result the club reprioritized and changed its grant request. The Lake Country Calendar has details, below.

Oyama Community hall upgrades
coming with municipal grant

RICHARD ROLKE - Mon Aug 22nd, 2016 9:00am - NEWS
Taxpayers are helping with upgrades at the Oyama Community Hall but not as much as originally sought.

Lake Country council decided Tuesday to provide $7,500 for kitchen and bathroom repairs.

“That’s what was left (in the community hall capital improvement grant) and that’s what they got,” said Mayor James Baker.

The Oyama Community Club had originally applied for $20,000 for a variety of projects, but only about $11,000 of the municipality’s $15,000 community hall capital improvement grant was remaining.

As a result, the OCC changed its grant request.

The focus is specifically the kitchen.

“The cabinets and counter tops are breaking off. In order to be Food Safe, we need to replace them,” said Butler.

Beyond the municipal grant, the OCC has revenue from fundraisers and facility rentals.

The total cost of the kitchen/washroom project is about $15,000.

On another matter, the District of Lake Country is amending zoning to allow event camping on the Oyama Community Club site.

When OCC rents the hall, it includes the adjacent ball field and other amenities. Camping has occurred previously during special events although it’s not allowed under existing municipal rules.
