Beyond the obvious fact that the branch organizes the local Remembrance Day activities each year, there is precious little information on Branch #89. In 2016 the Lake Country ceremony was held in the George Elliot Secondary School, 10241 Bottom Wood Lake Road.

The building in which it is housed is a large, two storey concrete block building, of which it occupies what appears to be the rear third of the lower floor. Upstairs is a large community meeting room, while in the front of the building is the Oyama Community Club.

Though this Legion was probably not the only one in the region to do it, the Lake Country Calendar made note of the fact that the branch staged an open house back in June of 2016, in conjunction with Royal Canadian Legion Week. Though the stated purpose was to allow those unfamiliar with the Legion to learn a bit about it, potential recruitment of new numbers had probably crossed their minds, as well.

Oyama Legion holding open house Saturday as part of Legion Week

EDITORIAL - Thu Jun 23rd, 2016 8:00am - NEWS
The Oyama branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is hosing an open house this Saturday to celebrate Royal Canadian Legion Week.

The federal government has declared June 20 to 26 as Royal Canadian Legion week and the Oyama branch is opening its doors to the public. The open house is an open invitation to everyone including families to come and enjoy a lunch, hamburger, chili or hot dog and see what the Legion is all about.

The Legion will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and a meat draw will be held at 2 p.m. Music and games will take place after 4 p.m.

“Most of the public are not aware that the membership of the Legion is open to every Canadian regardless of any military connection,” said spokesperson Jack Williamson. “The pursuit of the Legion remains primarily to support veterans but is not limited to that. The Oyama Legion managed to support four Cadet groups, scouts, the food bank as well as numerous other community needs. We also awarded four bursaries to students entering college in the Okanagan.”
