The bridge is also known as Soot Hill Bridge and the bricks are painted white.

Since its construction the bridge has been widened with a concrete extension on the eastern side. The original arch next to the extension can still be seen and has been painted yellow to make it stand out for any boats passing under the bridge.

The towpath side of the bridge has a metal lining to prevent erosion from the tow ropes in the days when the boats were towed by horses.

Close to the bridge is a store of stop planks. These are used to block off the canal when it needs to be drained for maintenance. Bridges and locks are often the sites for such planks because the canal is at its narrowest at these points.
