Completion of the River Weaver Navigation in 1734 provided a navigable route for transporting salt from Winsford, through Northwich, to Frodsham, where the Weaver joins the River Mersey.

"A collection of photographs held in the Waterways Archives in Gloucester show construction of the new bridge between 1931 and 1933. The bridge was built in situ working outwards from the centre, with the bridge in the open position. The bridge was complete by February 1933 with work work on the brick control tower complete by May 1933. The Machinery was installed by July and the bridge deck then laid. The bridge was swung shut for the first time on 10th August 1933." link
It replaced an earlier bride built in 1751, but this new one was built 100 yards further to the north.

At the time this waymark was created the bridge was being renovated and was only open as a single lane bridge with temporary traffic lights controlling the traffic flow.

The bridge has large steel gates at the end of the bridge which used to swing across the road to stop traffic when the bridge was opened. These days however there are also modern barriers which are lowered to stop the traffic.
