Norwood Central Fire Station - Norwood, MA - Converted Firehouses on Waymarking.com

in Norwood Center, at the corner of Nahantan Street and Central Street, is the former Central Fire Station, which is now the restaurant, Old Colony Cafe.

The building is located near both the Norwood Town Hall and the Norwood Town Common, on the north side of Nahatan Street and east of Central Street.

The building is a brick structure with light colored details. It is two stories tall and flat-roofed. There appears to be two parts - one by Central Street and an extension behind it and along Nahatan Street. On the Central Street side are two pairs of windows, which were where the large garage doors were located.

According to information on MACRIS the building was built in 1906-7. This building housed a horse drawn hook and ladder truck until World War I, well into the automobile era. During this time, Norwood evolved from an all volunteer staff to a paid staff. In 1964, a new fire station was built on Nahatan Street further east (which has since been rebuilt). The retired firehouse was used as a maintenance storage garage for several years. At some point, it was turned into a restaurant and has been this way for at least 20 years.
