Cet édifice est construit en 1865. Dès 1856, le marchand Amable Cyprien Prévost acquiert deux terrains contigus avec des maisons en devant de parcelle et des dépendances à l’arrière. En remplacement d’une ancienne structure, Prévost aurait fait construire l’année suivante un nouveau bâtiment en brique en fond de lot et y aurait exploité une épicerie. En 1865, il fait démolir les bâtiments en devant de parcelle et fait construire un édifice de quatre étages et demi. L’immeuble est vraisemblablement relié à la même période à l’annexe arrière par un passage couvert.
L’édifice est d’abord occupé par deux commerces au rez-de-chaussée (épicerie et pharmacie) et par l'hôtel Jacques-Cartier. Hormis l'intervalle de 1875 à 1880, durant lequel l’édifice est occupé par les bureaux de la compagnie ferroviaire du Grand Tronc, le bâtiment conserve ses fonctions d’origine jusqu’à la fin du XXe siècle. L’immeuble demeure aux mains de la famille Prévost jusqu’en 1927.
Nommé temporairement Hôtel Roy au début des années 1920 après avoir été vacant quelques années, l’immeuble reprend le nom d’Hôtel Jacques-Cartier lorsqu’il devient la propriété de Philias-Arthur Benoît en 1927. Celui-ci change le nom de l’édifice en 1941 pour celui d’Hôtel Nelson. L’établissement conserve cette appellation durant près de quarante ans avant de prendre temporairement l’appellation Auberge de l’Amical au début des années 1980 avant sa fermeture. Des membres de la famille Benoît demeurent en partie propriétaires du bâtiment jusqu’en 1997. Par ailleurs, tout au long du XXe siècle, un débit de boisson ou un restaurant occupe au moins une partie du rez-de-chaussée de l’immeuble. À la fin des années 1980, d’importants travaux de restauration et d’agrandissement de l’annexe arrière sont réalisés. Supprimées à une date inconnue au XXe siècle, les lucarnes sont alors reconstruites et les étages supérieurs sont réaménagés en bureaux. Un restaurant occupait toujours le rez-de-chaussée en 2008.

This building was constructed in 1865. As early as 1856, the merchant Amable Cyprien Prévost had acquired two contiguous lots with houses in front of the lot and outbuildings in the back. In place of an old structure, Prévost had built the following year a new brick building at the bottom of the lot and would have operated a grocery store there. In 1865 he demolished the buildings in front of the lot and had a four-and-a-half storey building constructed. The building was likely connected to the rear by a covered walkway.
The building was first occupied by two shops on the ground floor (grocery store and pharmacy) and by the Hotel Jacques-Cartier. Apart from the interval between 1875 and 1880, during which the building was occupied by the offices of the Grand Trunk Railway, the building retained its original functions until the end of the 20th century. The building remained in the hands of the Prévost family until 1927.
Temporarily named Hôtel Roy in the early 1920s after being vacant for a few years, the building was renamed Hôtel Jacques-Cartier when it became the property of Philias-Arthur Benoît in 1927. It changed the name of the hotel in 1941 to Hotel Nelson. The establishment retained that name for nearly forty years before temporarily taking the name Auberge de l'Amical (Friendly Inn) in the early 1980s before its closure. Members of the Benoît family remained part owners of the building until 1997. In addition, throughout the 20th century, a drinking place or restaurant occupied at least part of the ground floor of the building. In the late 1980s, extensive restoration and extension work was carried out. Removed at an unknown date in the 20th century, the dormers were rebuilt and the upper floors were converted into offices. A restaurant still occupied the ground floor in 2008.
