Lookout Cemetery is a smaller cemetery but well-maintained and contains the graves of pioneers to the area in the late 1800s. For such a small cemetery, I was surprised to see a large number of zinc headstones here as well as discovering the smallest zinc headstones I've ever seen, belonging to infants.
This cemetery is also home to some out-of-place graves belonging to a group of five men (and a teen) in the southwest corner of the cemetery property who were lynched over a bridge in Lookout in the early 1900s for petty theft crimes. This lynching was supposedly the last family lynching in the United States. There's a book about the lynching that I purchased and read titled Murder in Modoc: The Lookout Lynching and the story is a sad and unfortunate read and a dark-kept secret for the community of Lookout.
