"The nineteenth century marks the beginning of a major industrial revolution in Europe, and Sommières is no exception: intensive production plants set up there, among them the Griolet factory, which houses a woolen mill (a building recognizable by its chimney At its peak, in the 1830s, the spinning mill
Has nearly 350 workers.
It has a railway switch from the nearby train station. This large factory is made up of five buildings on either side of the street: workshops, hangars and workers 'and executives' quarters.
In the 20th century, Sommières still has two large factories:
• SOC OMI (Cotoniere du Midi) founded after the First World War. The factory manufactures until the 1980s; Hydrophilic cotton, gauze, pancake strips and dressings for hospitals and haberdashery, but also epaulettes or diapers for babies.
• The TORO, a textile factory located in the north of the city in 1958, in the former leather manufacturing workshops.
The railway is a major advantage for the industrial development of the city.
In 1872, a first line passes through Sommières. Ten years later, the city is at the heart of a true railway star between Montpellier, Nimes, Ales, Le Vigan and Lunel. Sommières becomes a strategic point in Languedoc for almost a hundred years. However, from 1960, competed by road traffic, the lines disappear one by one. In 1970, the station closed its doors. "
