"Le XiXe siècle marque l'Europe d'une importante révolution industrielle. Sommières n'y échappe pas. Des usines de production intensives'y installent. Parmi elles, l'usine Griolet qui abrite une filature de laine (bâtiment reconnaissable à sa cheminée de forme carrée). A son apogée, dans les années 1830, la filature
compte près de 350 ouvriers.
Elle bénéficie d'un aiguillage de chemin de fer arrivant de la gare toute proche. Cette grande fabrique se compose de cinq corps de bâtiments implantés de part et d'autre de la rue : on y trouve les ateliers de fabrication, les hangars et les logements des ouvriers et des cadres.
Au XX'ièc1e, Sommières compte encore deux grandes usines :
• La SOC OMI (Société Cotonnière du Midi) fondée après la première guerre mondiale. L'usine fabrique jusque dans les années 1980 ; coton hydrophile, gazes, bandes de crêpes et pansements pour les hôpitaux et merceries, mais aussi épaulettes ou couches pour bébé.
• Le TORO, usine textile installée au nord de la ville en 1958, dans les anciens ateliers de fabrication de cuirs.
Le chemin de fer est un avantage de taille pour l'essor industriel de la cité.
En 1872, une première ligne passe par Sommières. Dix ans plus tard, la ville est au cœur d'une véritable étoile ferroviaire entre Montpellier, Nîmes, Alès, Le Vigan et Lunel. Sommières devient un point stratégique en Languedoc pendant près de cent ans. Cependant, a partir de 1960, concurrencées par le trafic routier, les lignes disparaissent une à une. En 1970, la gare ferme définitivement ses portes."

It has a railway switch from the nearby train station. This large factory is made up of five buildings on either side of the street: workshops, hangars and workers 'and executives' quarters.

The railway is a major advantage for the industrial development of the city.
In 1872, a first line passes through Sommières. Ten years later, the city is at the heart of a true railway star between Montpellier, Nimes, Ales, Le Vigan and Lunel. Sommières becomes a strategic point in Languedoc for almost a hundred years. However, from 1960, competed by road traffic, the lines disappear one by one. In 1970, the station closed its doors. "
