The Evergreen Cemetery was first established around 1909, just 10 years after Washington statehood. The Evergreen Cemetery is on 14 acres of land. The cemetery was first established and maintained by the Hillyard Masonic Lodge until April 26, 1930. The first burial recorded was Rachel Prehm in November 1909, however there are earlier burials recorded. Either this land was used as a burial site previous to it becoming Evergreen Cemetery, or there were previous burials removed and reburied in this cemetery from surrounding farms. Some of the burials were in the Poor Farm Section, others were burials of those who died at the Poor Farm. There is a fenced in area on a small hill on the northwest end. You will find a memorial dedicated to Veterans of all wars. This section was purchased by the GAR. There are 13 Civil War Veterans that are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, some are in unmarked graves.

Some of the names on the monument are not buried in this cemetery. We will honor them with a listing of all names found on this zinc memorial. Typically zinc headstones are for individuals, however this is our first zinc war memorial that we located.

This memorial stands about 7 feet and a drape covers the top portion. The memorial has four sections two with a crest for the Grand Army of the Republic 1861 – 1866 and the Women’s Relief Corps. 1883.

The * before the name is those grave sites that we located.
