"L'origine du château remonte probablement au xe ou xie siècle : il a été bâti par la maison des Bermond, seigneurs d'Anduze et de Sauve.
Il tirait son importance stratégique de sa situation dominant le pont Tibère, pont romain franchissant le Vidourle.
Le château comprenait deux tours : la tour Bermonde au sud et la tour de Montlaur au nord, datant respectivement du début et de la fin du xiiie siècle. Seule la tour Bermonde est intacte, la tour de Montlaur ayant été partiellement détruite lors du siège de la ville en 1573 puis au xixe siècle.
Le château est désaffecté en 1809.
Ses remparts, dégradés en plusieurs endroits, font l'objet dans les années 2004-2013 d'un programme de restauration mené par la Ville de Sommières avec le soutien de la DRAC, de la région Languedoc-Roussillon et du département français du Gard.
Le château fait l'objet d'une inscription au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 8 septembre 20103."

"The origin of the castle probably dates back to the tenth or eleventh century: it was built by the house of Bermond, lords of Anduze and Sauve.
It derived its strategic importance from its position dominating the bridge Tiberius, Roman bridge crossing the Vidourle.
The castle consisted of two towers: the Bermonde tower to the south and the tower of Montlaur to the north, dating respectively from the beginning and the end of the 13th century. Only the Bermonde tower is intact, the tower of Montlaur having been partially destroyed during the siege of the city in 1573 then in the nineteenth century.
The castle was disused in 1809.
Its ramparts, degraded in several places, are the object in the years 2004-2013 of a program of restoration led by the City of Sommières with the support of the DRAC, the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the French department of Gard.
The castle has been registered for historical monuments since 8 September 2010. "
