Around 1.5ha, at Bells Point, northern end of Austinmer Beach, comprising the area above Low Water, is the best accessible natural exposure of the Tongarra coal seam, the interbedding sediments and the enclosing sedimentary formations. It is an important site for displaying some typical features of the Illawarra coal measures, and includes a clear example of a kaolinised bed enclosed in the coal seam. These seams are a significant feature of the Sydney basin rocks both as resources and as distinctive stratigraphic markers.
The northern end of Austinmer Beach exposes a natural outcrop of the Tongarra coal seam, one of the coal beds of the Illawarra coal measures. Interbedded in the coal is a thin kaolinised horizon which may originally have been a tuffaceous (volcanic) layer. Sandstone underlying and overlying the coal is also well exposed in the coastal outcrops.
