In North Kingstown, within Veterans Memorial Park, is this individual memorial for Capt. Matthew J. August.
Veterans Memorial Park is located along Boston Neck Road, about a quarter mile southeast of an arch bridge in the village of Wickford, on the right.
The memorial is along a sidewalk within the park. There is a concrete walkway from the main path to the monument.
The monument is a dark granite slab on a lighter granite pier on a base. The assembly is about two feet high.
The face has the following text:
"In memory of
Captain Matthew J. August, U.S. Army
First resident of North Kingstown
K.I.A. Operations Iraqi Freedom
19 Feb 1975 - 27 Jan 2004
We should thank God that such men lived
General George S Patton Jr"
Below that are the words: "Duty - Honor - Country"
Matthew graduated from high school in North Kingstown. He was an avid outdoorsman and trout fisherman. He married in 1988.
