This is part of a memorial to Hercules Linton, who was born in the town of Inverbervie on the east coast of Scotland, in 1837.
Linton helped design the clipper ship Cutty Sark in Dumbarton in 1869. The figurehead was carved by Fredrick Hellyer, it depicts the Cutty Sark, the nickname of Nannie Dee, the witch in Robert Burns 1791 poem Tam o' Shanter.
'Sark' is the Scots for a linen chemise or undergarment, "Cutty', meaning far too short. In the poem the witch ends up clutching Tam's grey mare's tail, which is depicted in the figurehead.
The ship ended up being used as a cadet ship before being decommissioned in 1954 where it ended up in dry dock at Greenwich. It remains here to this day despite two major fires in recent years.
The replica of the ships figurehead is situated near a Hercules Linton plaque on the main A92 road through the town near its northern outskirts just before the Jubilee Bridge.
